Environmental Stewardship

Connecticut Water has long shown a commitment to the environment through policies of land ownership, forest management, and source protection. The company owns approximately 6,000 acres of land in the state that is maintained in its natural state for watershed and aquifer protection. Environmental staff oversees forest management programs on our land and evaluates local land use proposals that may impact our drinking water supplies.

Connecticut Water was instrumental in negotiations on landmark state legislation that provided for tax credits for the donation of lands for open space and was the first to make a donation under the program. Since 2000, the company has worked with local communities to permanently protect as open space more than 850 acres of land that is no longer needed for water supply purposes.

Connecticut Water has received several Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) Green Circle Awards for our efforts to increase public access and wildlife viewing at certain company properties and by implementing technological/process changes that improved water quality. The Green Circle Award program recognizes businesses, institutions, individuals, and civic organizations who have participated in energy conservation, transportation, pollution prevention or recycling-related activities or projects that promote natural resource conservation or environmental awareness.
