Phillip Hopkins Water Treatment Plant

To better serve its Crystal Water Division customers in Killingly, Connecticut Water completed construction of a water treatment plant at the Phillip B. Hopkins Wellfield in 2006. This state-of-the-art plant, located in Killingly, is designed to perform two major functions:

  • Remove iron and manganese, which are naturally occurring minerals found in ground water, and
  • Add chlorine, a disinfectant that kills bacteria and helps prevent diseases

Although the iron and manganese levels in the Hopkins Wellfield did not represent a health concern, they did exceed the Connecticut Department of Health’s (DPH) secondary standards for aesthetics (color and odor). Iron and manganese can cause discolored water that may stain plumbing fixtures and laundry.

We are adding chlorine to reduce the likelihood of future bacterial contamination in the system. There have been isolated instances in the past where bacteria were detected in parts of the Crystal water system. In those instances, corrective measures were taken, but adding chlorine to the system is the best long-term solution to reduce the chances of a reoccurrence and best protect public health.
