Connecticut Water Begins Watershed
Inspections
Date: Wednesday, April 25, 2007
CLINTON, CONNECTICUT – April 25, 2007 – This
is the time of year when Connecticut Water Company begins
its annual sanitary inspections of properties located within
its public water supply areas. These inspections, required
by the Connecticut Department of Public Health, look for
any conditions that could potentially impact water quality
or affect our sources of supply. More than 3,100 inspections
are conducted by the company each year in towns across the
state, starting in spring and going through to the fall.
“Providing our customers with safe, reliable drinking
water is our No. 1 priority,” said Eric W. Thornburg,
Connecticut Water president and CEO. “These inspections
help us identify activities that could impact our water
supplies and protect our valuable water supply sources for
current and future customers’ needs.”
Connecticut Water’s watershed inspectors look for
potential impacts to public water supply from violations
such as failing septic systems, leaking heating oil tanks,
drainage discharge, fertilizer/pesticide use, livestock,
soil erosion and sedimentation, and dumping. If a violation
is discovered, Connecticut Water immediately notifies the
local health department and the homeowner in writing. The
company then monitors the situation as the town works with
the homeowner to correct the violation.
It is important to note that Connecticut Water notifies
the local police department before beginning inspections.
The watershed inspectors clearly identify themselves to
homeowners before entering their property. All employees
wear company uniforms, carry company identification and
drive trucks that are clearly marked with the company logo.
Anyone questioning the identity of a Connecticut Water employee
on their property should call Connecticut Water at 1-800-286-5700.
