Connecticut Water continues efforts to identify service line types as part of EPA rule

Connecticut Water continues to identify service line types as part of the EPA’s Lead Service Line Inventory Program, which requires all water systems across the country to document the material of water lines.
A service line is the pipe that runs underground from the water main in the street directly to your home. Connecticut Water owns and maintains all water main and related infrastructure up to about your property line. From there, the homeowner owns and is responsible for the pipes between the home and the property line, and inside the home. As part of the inventory program, we need to document both the service line material on both the company side and customer side.
Our teams scoured through lots of records, both digital and paper, to find information about water line material, but some areas still have pipes of unknown materials.

We’ve been reaching out to customers who have an unknown type of service line. If you received a postcard or email from us, your service line is currently listed as unknown. By taking a few minutes to self-report your service line material, you may help us avoid the need for additional inspections at your property. A simple survey and photo submission may provide the information needed. The process only takes a few minutes and a visit to your water meter.
Otherwise, we may have to perform a visual inspection of the service line by digging a small hole in your yard to get access to the pipe. Contractors working for Connecticut Water use a hydro excavation process to dig a small hole to visually inspect the service line and document the material.
